Wormwood: Shaking Judgment From the Heavens (Post 10 of Signs in the Heavens)

Updated: Jun 10, 2024

In This Post:

Just saying the word “Wormwood” brings frightful expectations to the hearer. When its name is mentioned people generally expect that "something scary is coming."

It seems to have end-time and world-destroying implications. Though we are not too sure about the specifics but we know nothing good comes from the name “Wormwood.”

To illustrate this, consider the following story.

A man awoke from a terrifying dream. In his nightmare, he witnessed the following:

A massive asteroid hurtled towards the Earth, and hordes of people were crying out for deliverance. The asteroid plunged into the Pacific Ocean, setting off massive tsunamis, hurricanes, and tornadoes – “atmospheric annihilation,” as he terms it. (1)

This is the type of scene we imagine with the name Wormwood.

C.S. Lewis titled the main character "Wormwood," in his book, The Screwtape Letters, Wormwood is a demon.

What is Wormwood and what does it signify when the Bible uses the term?

In the Bible's New Testament, in the book of Revelation,

Wormwood is the name used for a meteor that will pollute the earth's fresh water source.

The name of the star is Wormwood.

A third of the waters became wormwood,

and many men died from the water,

because it was made bitter.

Revelation 8:11

But the word wormwood is found in the Old Testament too.

So that there may not be among you

man or woman or family or tribe,

whose heart turns away today

from the LORD our God,

to go and serve the gods of these nations,

and that there may not be among you

a root bearing bitterness or wormwood;

Deuteronomy 29:18

In the Old Testament means "bitterness." In fact we see it also in the book of Proverbs.

But in the end she is bitter as wormwood,

Sharp as a two-edged sword.

Proverbs 5:4

However when we look at the Hebrew word for wormwood, we find it is laʿănâ.

It’s definition is to curse; wormwood (regarded as poisonous, and therefore accursed):—hemlock.

Hemlock (wormwood) is a plant.

Therefore, wormwood’s plant oil contains the chemical “thujone,” which may be poisonous.

The thujone in wormwood oil excites the central nervous system and can cause seizures and other adverse effects.

Poison hemlock is acutely toxic to people and animals, with symptoms appearing 20 minutes to three hours after ingestion.

All parts of the plant are poisonous and even the dead canes remain toxic for up to three years.

The true meaning of wormwood is to curse with a poison. As we see in the book of Jeremiah, it is a judgment to poison the waters.

Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts,

the God of Israel: "

Behold, I will feed them, this people,

with wormwood,

and give them water of gall to drink.

Jeremiah 9:15

The punishment was poisoned waters.

With this knowledge, reconsider the “Star” wormwood from Revelation.

Then the third angel sounded:

And a great star fell from heaven,

burning like a torch,

and it fell on a third of the rivers

and on the springs of water.

The name of the star is Wormwood.

A third of the waters became wormwood,

and many men died from the water,

because it was made bitter.

Revelation 8:10-11

God is making the waters “wormwood” or poison. Many will die in judgment from this sign from the sky.

I looked when He opened the sixth seal,

and behold, there was a great earthquake;

and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.

And the stars of heaven fell to the earth,

as a fig tree drops its late figs

when it is shaken by a mighty wind.

Revelation 6:12-13

Notice the total solar eclipse reference, which could also be a cloud from a super volcano or an hydrogen bomb blast clipping the sun’s light.

It is followed by a blood moon. This could be a lunar eclipse or the redness of the moon through an ash cloud as well.

Then we see the stars falling from the sky this is also the sign that Jesus predicts in Matthew’s gospel.

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened,

and the moon will not give its light;

the stars will fall from heaven,

and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Matthew 24:29

In Jesus‘s version, the stars, falling from heaven, our powers of the heavens, being shaken, which could reference fallen angels.

However, Wormwood is called a “star,” and it falls to the Earth to poison the freshwater. Most interpret this as a meteorite however, later in the book of revelation, angels are called stars.

His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven

and threw them to the earth.

Revelation 12:4

And just a few verses, it says that Satan had war in heaven, where the stars are.

And war broke out in heaven:

Michael and his angels

fought with the dragon;

and the dragon and his angels fought,

Revelation 12:7

The verse says that Michael defeats Satan and there is no place found in heaven for the devil and his angels. So they were kicked out of heaven and cast down to the Earth.

So the great dragon was cast out,

that serpent of old,

called the Devil and Satan,

who deceives the whole world;

he was cast to the earth,

and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelation 12:9

Therefore, most likely the stars that are cast down from heaven to the earth, reference the angels that are kicked down to the earth by Michael and his angels from the great heavenly war.

These are signs in the heavens.
