WHY TALK ABOUT AN ECLIPSE?

Updated: Apr 8, 2024

What place does that have in the church?

God speaks to us in the heavens. The heavens declare.

The heavens declare the glory of God;

And the firmament shows His handiwork.

Day unto day utters speech,

And night unto night reveals knowledge.

There is no speech nor language

Where their voice is not heard.

Their line has gone out through all the earth,

And their words to the end of the world.

Psalm 19:1- 4

This idea of speaking about a solar eclipse has been done before. Charles Spurgeon also on the day before a great eclipse spoke on the subject basing his sermon on Isaiah 45:7.

I form the light and create darkness,

I make peace and create calamity;

I, the LORD, do all these things.’

Spurgeon spoke on March 14, 1858 the day before the eclipse.

In 20 years Thomas Edison would attend an scientific eclipse party in Wyoming.

In 32 more years, Einstein would skyrocket to superstar status when his theories were proved true in a Total Solar Eclipse.

If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe,

how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

John 3:12

Jesus used natural objects and phenomena to explain natural truths all the time. The mustard seed, the pear of great price, the fig tree, etc…

He even said,

You know how to discern the face of the sky (weather),

but you cannot discern the signs of the times.

Matthew 16:3

We Are Commended to Know the Times

Here are two examples.

 Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do,

1 Chronicles 12:32

 There are people of God who know how to interpret the times, not by their own agenda, but by the word of God, listening to the Holy Spirit by their spirit.

And,

So you also, when you see all these things,

know that it is near—at the doors!

Matthew 24:33
