In This Post:
The Duke of Alva once being asked if he had observed a recent eclipse of the sun, replied: "No, I have no time to look up to heaven."
Being largely engaged in earthly things, the great masses never see, nor meditate upon, the magnificent objects in the sky.
"Look unto the heavens and see!”
Excerpt From: Burton, Charles J. “Astronomy and the Bible; or, God's two great books, nature and revelation.”
There is the seminal cry, "Look to the heavens!" It is declared in Scripture.
My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord;
In the morning I will direct it to You,
And I will look up.
Psalm 5:3
Now when these things begin to happen,
look up and lift up your heads,
because your redemption draws near.
Luke 21:28
These are verses where the directive from God is to look up. Why? David may say it best.
I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2
The Lord is up. He is our help, so we lift up our head and look to God in heaven. Hence, the phrase: Look to the heavens!
In Hebrew there is a word which means "to lift up," which has immediate recognition with something in English we all know.
The word is "nasa."
That's right, "nasa," and we immediately think of NASA, the National Air and Space Administration. The organization responsible for "lifting up" rockets and satellites into the heavens.
Is this a coincidence?
The Hebrew variant is used in this verse:
Now the flood was on the earth forty days.
The waters increased and lifted up (nasa) the ark,
and it rose high above the earth.
Genesis 7:17
Nasa is pronounced naw-saw', and means:
to lift up
to carry off
to rise up
We see it also concerning Abraham.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him:
“Lift (nasa) your eyes now and look from the place where you are
—northward, southward, eastward, and westward;
Genesis 13:14
The inclination is clear: Look up.
As the rockets of NASA lift up to the heavens, so does the Lord ask us to lift up our eyes to the heavens because there are signs there that tell us about Him.
This is an example of how we are to nasa, or lift up our eyes to see the Lord.
It is from the God of heaven where our help comes from.
We see great and fearful signs in the heavens.
We worry, we fret, or we are amazed by them. We might ignore them as we listen to some "sadducee" influencers in the church who say, "We don't need signs today."
Scientists also say, "those are just astronomical occurrences and they are not signs from God." But Scripture declares differently.
Then God said,
“Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens
to divide the day from the night;
and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;
Genesis 1:14
We see Total Solar Eclipses, Blood Moons, Comets, Solar Flares, and the like. What is God telling us in these things? And is Creation testifying of its Creator through these events?
There are biblical accounts of the sun standing still about a whole day, and the famous Star of Bethlehem, and well as a heavenly object named Wormwood from the book of Revelation.
And here is one more thing. God gave this message to Joel for those living in the last days, saying:
“I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood,
before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord”
Joel 2:30-31
This series will delve into each of these and more. Read on as we discover the signs in the heavens that God uses to declare Himself to us and what they mean according to the time that they are given.
