What Does it Mean When the Sun Goes Dark? (Post 4 of Signs in the Heavens)

The sun shall be turned into darkness,

Joel 2:31




And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth...

Joel 2:30


The Lord still uses wonders much to the dismay of the pious few who think the Lord will not use signs concerning His purposes.


The sun shall be turned into darkness...

and the moon into blood...

Before the coming of the great and

awesome day of the Lord.

Joel 2:31


This passage is generally understood as a prophecy about signs that will precede the Day of the Lord, which is a day of divine judgment at the end of the world. The passage appears to refer to a solar eclipse (sun turned into darkness).


The claim of a blood moon and a total solar eclipse being signs of the beginning of the end times originates in the Book of Joel, in this verse.


However, look at the full verse.


And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:

Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.

The sun shall be turned into darkness,

And the moon into blood,

Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.

Joel 2:31-32


In this verse there is an oft overlooked portion of it that may give us a clue.


Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.


 

Fire and pillars of smoke could refuse to the explosion of a super volcano which ejects ash and smoke.


Blood can be lava, fire obvious from a volcano, and smoke is the ash plume that comes from the ejected material spraying into the air by volcanic gases mixing with dirt, rock, and lapilli (latin for "little stones").


One of the after effects of a volcano is that a dust cloud can remain in the atmosphere for sometime.


The effect of this cloud is that there is an obscuring of the sun "turning the sun into darkness" especially during daylight hours, and the moon can be seen in a red haze.


Above, is an eerie sunrise as captured by ABC News Australia in 2022 when the ash cloud began to change the bright sun into a darker version of itself.

The high blanket of cloud also changed the normally brilliantly bright sun into an ominous golden orb.

and

The volcanic ash cloud from Tonga drifted over Queensland overnight and this morning.

reported ABC News Australia., January 16, 2022 after the volcanic eruption of the Tonga volcano.


 

Events like these certainly qualify for the events of Joel 2:31-32. They are signs "in the earth" as mentioned in verse 31.


However for signs in the heavens is also written about by the prophet Joel. Indeed, the "blood moon" of a lunar eclipse and the "sun turned to darkness" of a total solar eclipse fit the bill as well.


Whether a solar eclipse or a lunar version occurs this is what Joel saw before the Lord reigned down judgment upon the earth.
