The Wesley Oak (Crossroads of Revival)

Updated: Apr 18, 2024

The Witness Tree

On St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, near Fort Frederica, lies Christ Church.

It is a location

where men of history intersected.

This is the site where Charles Wesley was invited to speak to a local congregation by General James Oglethorpe.

Not far from this spot stood the "great tree" under which Charles Wesley had prayers and preached, March 14, 1736, the first Sunday after his arrival. There were about twenty people present, among whom was Mr. Oglethorpe. A marker was established in 1958 to commemorate the event.

It is here by the tree pictured above, the one the people call the Wesley Oak, that Reverend Charles Wesley spoke to an open air meeting of twenty people, and delivered his sermon.

Twenty-one (21) people were in attendance.

Today a beautiful church sits on the site with pristine grounds. There is also a cemetery with headstones as old as the early 1800s. This campus marks the very spot where Charles Wesley stood to preach his historic sermon.

A year later, George Whitfield, appointed by the Bishop of London to serve as Deacon at Savannah and Frederica, wrote in his Journal (August 8, 1737): "In the evening we had publick Prayers, and expounding of the second Lesson under a large tree, and many more present than could be expected."

Founders and Shapers

This particular spot would host the one of the two founders of the Methodist denomination of the Christian faith (1736) and one of the two main shapers of the First Great Awakening (1737). They each preached under this tree only a year apart.

One of the founders of Methodism and

one of the shapers of the First Great Awakening in America

preached in the same spot one year apart.

The Eclipse Connection

When checking for a tie in with the Total Solar Eclipse path crossing Revival locations, at first, there seemed to be no connection. Since there was no totality path back to 1970 that overshadowed where the Wesley Oak resides, that is St. Simon's Island, Georgia, then we must look forward. And in doing so, the future shows us that there is one indeed.

The 2052 Total Solar Eclipse will march from from Florida in the south and shadow over the northern tip of St. Simon's Island.

Where is The Wesley Oak?

On the northern tip of St. Simon's Island.

Therefore, the connection still stands, as God is using the Total Solar Eclipse's Path of Totality to mark past revival connections.
