Passing Over Old Revival Fires

The 2024 Total Solar Eclipse is passing over some old flames of revival fires. most notably the "Burned Over District," the home of Charles Finney, and the more recent "Quiet Revival," of Vermont.

The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse path marked the Second Great Awakening's start, but the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Path covers its Tour-de-force.

2017 showed us its spark but 2024 pinpoints its raging flames.

The Revival District

The Second Great Awakening started in Logan County, Kentucky at Red River Meeting House in the 1790s with its Camp meetings, then spread up to Cane Ridge. Later it would flow all the way up to New York in what would become known as the Burned Over District.

The Burned Over District

It was said to have been the most evangelized area with revival fire.

The Burned Over District - where religious revivals and the formation of new religious movements of the Second Great Awakening took place, to such a great extent that spiritual fervor seemed to set the area on fire.

  • Characteristic 1: a wild excitement passing through that region, which they called a revival of religion, but which turned out to be spurious.

  • Characteristic 2: These spurious movements created feelings of apprehension towards revivals

We might call it today the "Burned Out" District. This area had enough of religious movements.

Location of the Burned "Out" District

The area of this over revival-ed people was Western to Central New York.

It also expands to include other areas of Upstate New York that were important to these movements.

Although, it was shown that this sentiment was starting to prevail to the Ohio River Valley in the lower Midwest, and to the United States as a whole

The Effect of Burned "Out" People

Strange things began to come out of the region of over revived populace to the point that they did not the traditional revival experience. From this western New York region came such offshoots as Mormonism from Palmyra, New York, and the Seven Day Adventist movement from Low Hampton, New York. The Social Gospel originated from this region as well as teh Fox Sisters' Spiritist Church with tis seances being all the rage.

Each of these variants formed

out of a region burned out with revivals,

becoming resistant to the traditional message of Christ.

On the heels of these offshoots came such things as the Shakers, the Utopian Experiments, as well as an outburst of vegetarianism.

Social actions were birthed out of this region as well such as Prohibition, Woman's Rights, and Abolitionism.

Some good did come out of this but very little progress was made in the form of traditional faith, until a certain preacher would come onto the scene during the Second Great Awakening.
