Man's Unlimited Spirit (Post 5 – the Image of God)

Updated: Jul 16, 2024

In This Post:

And the man became a living being (soul),

Genesis 2:7

It seems that a lot of people have some misconceptions about what the spirit of a man is. That is just as it should be for a person’s spirit is, quite frankly, spiritual, which means that it is difficult to comprehend using natural methods.

But the natural man

does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him;

nor can he know them,

because they are spiritually discerned.

1 Corinthians 2:14

Some think that a spirit in a man is what makes him different from all other creatures in the planet. It is not.

Animal have spirits. We even say, “What spirit animal are you?”

Though that is not scriptural that there is the matter of an animal spirit, it does testify to the fact that people understand that animals spa have them.

We might also say, “Wow, that is a spirited horse!”

The Bible says this about the spirit in a man and of an animal.

Who knows the spirit of the sons of men,

which goes upward,

and the spirit of the animal,

which goes down to the earth?

Ecclesiastes 3:21

Animals have spirits because that is how they hear from God.

So the LORD spoke to the fish,

and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Jonah 2:10

Balaam’s donkey saw into the spiritual realm.

And when the donkey saw

the Angel of the LORD,

she pushed herself against the wall

and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall;

so he struck her again.

Numbers 22:25

They often say animals act strange before a major natural event. They sense it in their spirit. They are often thought to see spirits.

But man has a different spirit than the animal. It has unique advantages.

But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.

Job 32:8

The words “spirit” and “breath” are translations of the Hebrew word neshamah and the Greek word pneuma. The words mean “strong wind, blast, or inspiration.” Neshamah is the source of life that vitalizes humanity (Job 33:4). It is the intangible, unseen human spirit that governs man’s mental and emotional existence. The apostle Paul said, “Who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him?” (1 Corinthians 2:11). Upon death the “spirit returns back to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12:7; see also Job 34:14-15; Psalm 104:29-30).

The human spirit was damaged in the fall. When Adam sinned, his ability to fellowship with God was broken; he did not die physically that day, but he died spiritually. Ever since, the human spirit has borne the effects of the fall. Before salvation, a person is characterized as spiritually “dead” (Ephesians 2:1-5; Colossians 2:13). A relationship with Christ revitalizes our spirits and renews us day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16).

The spirit is eternal.

There was a dream where a man went to the place where the ocean met the land. The waves crashed upon the sand as the surf roared. He reached into the water and pulled out a handful of water, which though for a moment filled his palm, soon ran out between his fingers. Soon very little of the water remained in his grasp.

The scene shifted and this time the man held a glass jar.

With the bottle he reached into the water and pulled out a large portion, which filled it to the brim.

This time, however, not a drop was lost.

The jar proved to be a better vessel to hold water than the hand.

The physical brain is as unfitting to retain spiritual knowledge as the hand was water. It can grasp much for a short time but it cannot hold for long. The brain, like the hand, is the wrong vessel.

The spirit is what holds spiritual knowledge, for it will retain it all with out loss. It is unlimited, like a hard drive with an infinite amount of gigabytes. The only way for a person to retain knowledge from an infinite God is with an infinite spirit.

Yet the spirit can be damaged.

When man sinned in the Garden of Eden, he lost access to his eternal unlimited spirit. His access died. He no longer had a spirit that connected with God. now generations of mankind have been born without access to a spiritual God by a spirit they possess of their own.

Since the Fall, humanity has been operating at 66% of his true potential.

He has a body and a soul, but no spirit.

But Jesus said that a man must be "born again."

Jesus answered,

“Most assuredly, I say to you,

unless one is born of water and the Spirit,

he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

John 3:5

In his explanation He explained that a person must be born of water (a physical birth) therefore in possession of a physical body, and that he must also be born of the spirit.

The second birth is a spiritual birth.

When we are born again, our spirit is regenerated in us, and we are as Jesus proclaimed, "born of the Spirit." From this spirit we are once again connected to heaven.
