Do We Look Like God? (Post 1 – the Image of God)

Updated: Jul 16, 2024

In This Post:

No one really knows what the Father looks like. For at no time has anyone seen the Father.

No one has seen God at any time.

The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father,

He has declared Him.

John 1:18

However, we have seen Jesus. He came in the flesh and we have accounts of his form.

And the Word became flesh

and dwelt among us,

and we beheld His glory,

the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14

We know that Jesus came in human form. He embodies the godhead, but he came in human form. That means he had two arms, two legs, a mouth, ears and eyes just like any other person we can see.

But someone will logically point out that just because God took on the form of a man (so that we could relate to Him) does not necessarily mean that we look like God.

So the question remains: What does God look like?

Scripture declares that God has eyes, a mouth, that he can smell fragrances, he can hear, that he has an arm, and it talks about to walk with the Lord as if he had legs. It says he sits on a throne.

Eyes:

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.

2 Chronicles 16:9

Ears:

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,

And His ears are open to their cry.

Psalm 34:15

Mouth:

But He answered and said,

"It is written,

'Man shall not live by bread alone,

but by every word that proceeds

from the mouth of God.'"

Matthew 4:4

Arms:

"Lord, who has believed our report?

And to whom has the arm of the LORD

been revealed?"

John 12:38

Legs/Feet:

'The LORD said to my Lord, "

Sit at My right hand,

Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."'

Acts 2:34-35

Thus says the LORD:

“Heaven is My throne,

And earth is My footstool.

Isaiah 66:1

However, Scripture does say that God is a spiritual being with no physical body.

God is Spirit,

and those who worship Him

must worship in spirit and truth."

John 4:24

So the question remains: Does God look like a man?

Not only do we grapple with the idea of whether the Lord looks like us, we also must deal with God's other unique feature that must be addressed.

God is there in one.

The Godhead is a concept that we struggle with, and wrestle to wrap our mind around we simply cannot grasp that God is a triune being.

But what does that mean?

Trinity is a compound term derived from two Latin words: Tri + Unitas

Tri or Trinity comes from the Latin “tri” meaning "three." We find this in many English words from tripod to tricycle.

The second is unitas meaning “one.” The obvious word we get from unitas is unity.

Therefore, God is a tri-une being, meaning that there is one God in three Persons.

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,

baptizing them in the name

of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:19

But exactly how is God three and one at the same time? Many people have stumbled at this point, some have even lost their faith over this one characteristic of God because it seems to be unnatural to consider. Where do we even see in this creation as a reference point?

Here it is in its simplest form: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three Persons, but one God.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!

Deuteronomy 6:4

An example of three but one is water. Water can help explain the Trinity to our finite minds. When hot, water is a vapor, when cold, it is ice. However, when it is at room temperature, then water is a liquid. In each state, ice vapor, or liquid, it is still water, one thing.

Therefore, water is a triune example.

This is actually more commonly found in the physical realm than we realize.

Take the human hand. There are five fingers, but one hand.

It also works in a family reference: There are many people in one family with a father, mother, and children. However, they are all one family.

There are many states in one country, but we are one nation.

We can see how this works up up and down the scale.

The unique feature is that God is a triune being.

The Construction of Man

Then God said,

“Let Us make man in Our image,

according to Our likeness..."

Genesis 1:26

God said, let "us" make man in "our" image. Here was a conference between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit about the creation of mankind. Some have taught that this was the Lord talking to the angels, because of the use of the world "elohim," which can be translated as "God" or "angels," but this explanation comes from those who deny the triune nature of God.

Here Elohim discussed the creation of mankind as a unique and crowning event, so much so that it garnered separate counsel on the matter. This is something that God thought to "add" to His creation as a crowning achievement. He wanted something to introduced to this beautiful realm that would be in His image.

What is His image? Does heat mean we look like Him, or that we are formed to exist in His nature?

Here is the question: What is God‘s image? Put quite simply, the image of God is three-in-one.

Man was made in the three in one image in which God exists. Therefore, since God is three Persons but one God, then man would be three components but one person.

Just as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one God, we have a body, a soul, and a spirit, and are one person.

We are made in the image of God.
