America's Spiritual Heritage

Now that July 4th is here, it is a good time to reflect on the history of America as we celebrate the independence of our nation.

During the holiday, we enjoy great American food, family get togethers, and celebrations complete with fireworks. It is a time the whole nation can enjoy the blessings of liberty.

In a time when the United States was fledgling concern, the "Colonies" in America came together, defied the hand of its British overlord, and defeated the largest military on the face of the earth just for the right to survive.

The Declaration of Independence's closing words mention a "firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence."

After defeating the British, founding father Benjamin Franklin reminded the leaders forming the new nation's system of government,

"The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see that God governs in the affairs of men...Have we now forgotten this powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?" (1)

The generation that saw America with only 3 million people were able to produce a George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison, just to name a few.

There was also Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere.

Names familiar to us today also came from that era, like John Hancock, Ethan Allen, William Penn, Dr Benjamin Rush, and John Paul Jones, "Father of the American Navy."

There is also Nathaniel Greene, and Henry Knox.

These were just a few of the men that generation gave us to throw off tyranny and navigate the course of a new country.

All of those great names in just a population of 3 million. Later the United States would produce even great people like Abraham Lincoln.

There would be great generals like Eisenhower and Patton, great scientists like Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and inventors like Samuel Morse.

America would go one to win one out every two Nobel prize in history to this day.

But what has happened to such a rich population of people?

Currently, we have a nation of 333 million people, a more rich pool of population to pull from, yet, where are the great people of today?

When a nation of only 3 million could produce a George Washingtons and Thomas Jefferson.

Where are these great men and women of the current day with a choice of over 333 million?

The quality of founders with clear vision, and the ability to lead a nation even against incredible odds, was blessing from the Lord. How will we pray this July 4th? Lord bless with more great men and women to lead our nation in the years to come.

Remember that great Friend Who led us against insurmountable odds to become the greatest nation on the earth.

We need a national return to God.
